Portable Document Format (PDF) is a file format created by Adobe Systems in 1993 for document exchange. PDF is used to represent the two ways of application software, hardware and operating system independent three-dimensional files. [2] Each PDF file encapsulates a fixed layout of the 2D documents, including text, fonts, a complete description of the image, and 2D vector graphics files writing. Recently, 3D graphics can be embedded in PDF documents with Acrobat 3D using U3D or PRC and various other data formats.

Used to be a proprietary format, PDF has been officially launched, as a July 1, 2008 an open standard by the International Organization for Standardization's ISO / IEC 32000-1:2008
